Fairview Calendar Girls

Good Afternoon to you all far and wide, from my humble cottage abode in South Canterbury, New Zealand.On Tuesday night I had the wonderful opportunity to speak to the Fairview Calendar Girls in Timaru.

As I spoke of their journey, the Rylstone original calendar girls and my journey, it was all about getting out of one’s comfort zone and believing that anything is possible.

Thank you to the Fairview Women’s Institute for asking me to share my stories with them.

It was my pleasure to see a group of vibrant women adapting themselves to ensure their community stays together with lots of fun and hard work.

Their Calendar Girls work towards the Cancer Society is a tribute to them and may each of us remember that our community fabric is held together by groups and individuals who have a bigger vision with an absolute passion and sense of greater care for their communities. Go Girls!!!

To those who seek greater things, take the moment to step out of our comfort zones and see…

Visions and Footprints

Early Birdz get the worm. Watch this space, as some experiences will now have an Early Birdz offer.

Pay it forward: Since I began the concept of taking women out of their comfort zone to experience out of the ordinary travel experiences, one of my visions was to provide the opportunity for some well deserving, ‘unsung heroes’ to join us on some of these travels.

I believe in playing it forward, and in supporting others who may not have the ability to experience these journeys, yet offer so much to others.

So if you know someone who you think would love to join us on a Road Less Travelled Journey, I would love you to nominate her.

There will be a criteria. I would love to hear their stories and how they contribute towards making the world a better place, yet seek no personal gratification.

Travel Responsibly: As we travel, no matter whether it is in our own back yard or further afield, it is of paramount importance that we respect at all times, other peoples wishes, beliefs and ways of life.

To respect and care for our environment, is about travelling responsibly; we leave no litter and only soft footprints remain.

When we have moved on, all that is left is our good vibrations.

Travelling “The Road Less Travelled” way is to do so in a non judgemental way, to have the ability to go with the flow and to leave the place better for the experience our footprints left.

Health and Wellbeing: We are all now looking for improved Health and Wellbeing as life on the horizon constantly changes.

This may be sought in many varied ways and health and wellbeing is one of my underpining philosophies as we journey together.

A Road Less Travelled experience will embrace you, through learnings and experiences where you have the ability to rejeuvenate your mind, body and soul.

McKenzie Days

As I sit here on my outdoor chair soaking in the autumn sun with Mckenzie basin colours of green, gold and red around me, I feel nourished and relaxed by the crisp autumn sunshine.

I think of what was a working mans town of the 1970′s ,Twizel, where men endured incredible hardships to create a huge hyro- electric power scheme, with engineering on a mammoth scale, to what has now become a very popular playground for those who love the mountains of this Aoraki region with Lake Ruatanwiha as a huge rowing venue and land activites where one can relax and play in this beautiful basin.

It is with thanks that the ponds and canals created by those early workers now harbour plenty of fish, where salmon farms flourish, and anglers wile away their hrs waiting patiently for that line to go taut. Hey presto supper of fresh fish is on the menu.

So as I sit here watching the angler, I feel the peace that a quiet days fishing provides.

And I also have the story of the fish that got away.

To all those anglers, mountaineers and people who thrive in this landscape, it is your stories and expeditions that nourish, entertain and teach us the about the bare beauty of this place.

The view from Lake Pukaki across to Aoraki Mt Cook, is a vision unparallelled.

If you havent been to this region, I would put it on your ‘must do’ list.

Landscapes change quickly and I believe it is so important to capture the moments in time before they pass.

Sunday in the country

As I skip between jobs and enjoy this beautiful sunshine this Sunday brings, I think about the elderly women I have been nursing at the hospital over the past few days.

Each age for us brings a new role, from babies to children, from teens to adults. From Mothers and Sisters to Grandmothers and Grandaunts.

As I care for these often fragile people, I think about their past journeys and smile deeply when their granddaughters come to ” Oma” and say’ I love you’.

Journeys in Autumn and journeys in Spring. May we lest forget the steps that came before.
